ABSTRACT
Aim of the study is to examine the social studies course and its role in transfer of culture. In this context, the historical development of the social studies course, the nature of the social studies, the concept of culture and the relationship between this concept and social studies are scrutinized; then, the philosophy, aims and learning outcomes of the social studies programs of 2005 which update in 2015 and 2017 were examined in the cultural context, and the relationship between the social studies course and culture was tried to be determined. In this study which was carried out with qualitative descriptive design, document review was used. The findings of the study show that the social studies course is closely related to culture and the social studies course is one of the most important courses given at primary level in terms of transfer of culture. In addition, although the 2017 program emphasized more cultural protection than the 2005 program, it was weaker than the 2005 program, on the other hand in both programs, it was emphasized that students develop and sustain the elements of Turkish culture.
